The brief

Defyn Digital wanted a way to quickly showcase the breadth of their work, without customers having to read through multiple case studies, or scroll through a website. They wanted their attention caught instantly.

The brief was to create a ~minute long animation that could be used to send directly to clients, display on their website and be broken up into smaller sections to be used as individual assets.

It always starts with a sketchbook

I was given a list of the projects Defyn wanted including in the animation, so one project at a time, I worked out how I was going to showcase each piece of work.

I roughly worked out how each key element from the project was going to transition in seamlessly from the previous project, and animate between the next one.

Hand-drawn sketches of a user interface, including photo gallery, animated grid, book demo, animated pixels, text swipe, and frame of a heartbeat, with handwritten notes explaining design features and interactions.
A infographic card grid promoting Harrison.ai, featuring statistics about its use and impact, a photo of medical professionals reviewing a X-ray, and an X-ray image of a human chest.
Text saying 'Book a demo' with a blue arrow icon next to the word 'demo' on a white background.

Asset creation

Due to the fairly fast turnaround of this project, I maximised time efficiency by creating the assets using a combination of screenshots, and recreating the elements in illustrator.

I created all the assets with after effects in mind, layering and naming the elements that were going to be animated appropriately to ensure a hygienic file structure.

Executing the animation in After Effects

After the assets had been created for each project, I began working on each individual animaton, that would make up roughly 3-4 compositions per project. Keeping each element separated, allowed for flexibility when editing, as it wouldn’t have a knock on effect to the following section.

Creating the compositions for each project this way allows for each part to be stitched together easily for the continuous animation, whilst remaining flexible enough to separate into different chunks for individual assets.
